Unfortunately, no standard exists today that can accurately and reliably predict when your hard drive will fail. Often the best measure is the warranty period and service life as stated by the manufacturer, however these offer only an indication about your drive's reliability. The warranty period offered by hard drive manufacturers only cover the period in which they believe the hard drive is least likely to fail, other scenarios make little business sense. Typical manufacturers offer warranties on hard drives for a period ranging from 1 to 3 years, while the average service life expectancy of a hard disk is usually given as "5 years or 20,000 hours." This means if a hard disk operates 24 hours a day, you will need to replace your drive with a new one every 1.5 to 2 years.
